Meet Kadek

Unlike a typical Traveling Spoon experience that takes place in a home, this is a unique experience that takes place on an organic community farm and kitchen run by a group of locals interested in sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. After years working in the hospitality industry, Kadek returned to his village in Pejeng, Bali to start his own business with a focus on sustainable farming practices that are kind to the environment. A passionate host, who combines his love for farming, cooking, and healthy food into a fun and immersive cooking class in Ubud on his organic farm. Alongside local community members, Kadek runs an organic farm that promotes waste reduction and sustainable agriculture. He learned traditional Balinese recipes and cooking methods from his mother and his brother-in-law, a chef at a 5-star hotel. Kadek’s family and community members often join the experience, offering guests an authentic glimpse into village life. His mission is to share the benefits of organic farming and the rich culinary traditions of Bali with visitors from around the world.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

Cooking experience: (1-10 guests) Join Kadek for a guided tour of his organic farm in Ubud, where you’ll gather fresh ingredients for your Balinese cooking class. Explore the farm, learn about local farming practices, and collect produce like beans and lemongrass. The fun, interactive tour lasts 30-45 minutes, with straw hats provided to keep you cool. Afterward, enjoy a refreshing drink and wet towels before starting your hands-on Balinese cooking experience.

Your cooking class in Ubud takes place in a traditional Balinese style outdoor community kitchen. After sipping on a cold beverage, and donning an apron, start by helping Kadek prepare and cook an authentic Balinese meal. During your two-hour Ubud cooking class, you will learn to make 2-3 authentic dishes. Enjoy a meal of the dishes you prepared along with a couple of dishes that Kadek will have prepared in advance. Kadek will also give you a cookbook with recipes of the dishes you cooked so that you can re-create them back home!

After cooking enjoy the meal you helped prepare in a rustic, traditional, outdoor area. Some of the dishes you might try are nasi sela (rice with sweet potato), garang asem (chicken cooked with Balinese spices), tuna satay (traditional Balinese fish kebabs) and sayur urab (green vegetables with coconut and spices). You will end your meal with kolak (banana dessert) and Balinese coffee or lemongrass tea. Please note that Kadek will not join you for the meal, as he first needs to offer the meal to mother nature and prefers that you don’t wait for him to finish the ritual to start your meal.

Notes: Unlike most Traveling Spoon experiences, this is a small-group, shared experience (non-private). Because this experience takes place outdoors it can get a bit hot so please wear clothes and shoes appropriate for walking and cooking in a working farm. We recommend bringing bug spray, sunscreen and a hand towel or tissues.

Prices include round-trip transportation only from Ubud hotels - Hanoman street, Monkey Forest street, and Jl. Raya Ubud. If guests stay outside these areas, pick up point will be in front of Maybank Gianyar (Jl. Raya Ubud No.115, Petulu, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia). Please be sure to include your hotel name and address in the reservation form (only if you're staying in Ubud) so your host can arrange for your pick-up and drop-off.

PERSONALLY VETTED REVIEW
A Traveling Spoon ambassador visited this host. Here is their personal review.

This was a fun and interesting experience. We had a lovely traditional Balinese welcome drink; the food was very fresh and the tuna satay with sambal and green bean salad were our favorite dishes. We ended up having a lovely time and a great day. We walked around the farm to pick up ingredients, cooked a meal, ate and engaged in some cultural discussion. You will walk away learning a lot!

Best experience in Bali! This is NOT a ‘tourist’ trap. This is the real deal. We learned (and then ate) a 4 course meal made with fruit, herbs and veggies from the garden, fresh chicken (from their chickens) - and let’s not forget the best green beans of my life, and (of course) rice from their farm. Everything was cooked in home made coconut oil made by their neighbor (ummm yes I’m bringing a few bottles home with me). That was just the tip of the iceberg! We were given a tour of the family compound and had all the temples and lifestyle explained to us. A tour of the garden - and then were given a treat of a traditional Balinese dance from her niece and experienced her ‘hobby’ which is weaving with the hand died yarns from her garden (yes I bought one of these exquisite pieces to hang in my house). I experienced Soooooo much love and warmth and generosity. This is the best thing I have done in Bali so far! Do this first so you can then approach the culture with a foundatiinal understanding as you move forward with your days. Oh, and they have a super cute brand new guest house with an infinity pool overlooking the rice gardens. I’ll definitely stay here in the future.

I can't underscore enough the uniqueness of this Travelling Spoon experience, being it is within the context of a working farm. The setting really helped us dive 'one more click' further upstream into the local food culture, than even other typical TS experiences. Kadek and his cohort Apung were so gracious with their knowledge & hospitality; we learned much not just about the ingredients & food we were handling, but about the Balinese culture that cultivates all of it. The food itself was fun and delicious. The particular highlights for me was assembling the Bumbu Bali (the base that went into multiple dishes), and shaping...then grilling and devouring... the Sate Lilit; using tuna in this case. The organic farm team have a wonderful mission, and they obviously enjoy sharing their jewel with curious & hungry visitors like us. I wish them and future TSers in Bali a future of many more rewarding encounters!

We went to Bali for our honeymoon and this ended up being the highlight of our trip. Apung was our guide for the day, with Kadek being the lead in the kitchen. Our transport service from Ubud was very prompt and we started the tour with a refreshing young coconut drink and pink guava right off the tree. Since it was low season, we were the only two people. Their regular class is able to accommodate up to 8 people. Walking through the farm, Apung showed us the differences in balinese fruit and how to harvest galangal, ginger, turmeric, papaya, and much more. Once reaching the kitchen, we were served with a refreshing drink before getting to cooking. Everyone was attentive and patient. After our meal, we received a recipe book with everything we had prepared that day. It was truly a unique experience and we are so glad we went with this course and supported a local community.

Kadek and his team made this experience a special time during our stay in Ubud. Can only recommend it, we got a tour around the organic farm where we collected the ingredients for our cooking. Food tasted marvelous and we learned a lot about traditional meal preparation. The meal was accompanied by traditional balinese music, played by Kadek's 11-year old son. Money well spent, as it goes to maintain this organic farm.

A truly memorable and authentic Balinese experience. This is far more than “just” a cooking class, rather an immersive experience to meet an enthusiastic and engaging team from MAI Organic farm. This activity is four hours long, but at the end we found it the perfect duration as there was so much to do, learn and experience. After a warm welcome and introductory explanation, you go out to forage in the farm for the ingredients you will cook with (a highly educational experience), before learning how to prepare a Balinese meal from them. The next part involves the cooking of multiple dishes with the help of the MAI Team (led by the excellent Apung in our case) in the community kitchen which is again informative and fun. Then the finale is to eat the delicious dishes that you have prepared. We were blessed to them spend some time talking to the project’s leader Kadek who provided a fantastic insight into the work of the Pejeng community project and why it is so important for the people of the village. Highly informative and humbling. With a smooth running and inclusive transfer to/from our hotel, this finished a deeply memorable and enjoyable evening. Hugely recommended on every level

Got to tour an organic farm (Mai Organic), saw all the wonderful things they're doing with the locals, and then got to cook a scrumptious feast that was some of the best food we had on our entire trip. I can't recommend this enough.

Awesome Cooking Class! Our family of 4 adults spent a wonderful day with Kadek, Putu and their family. We were warmly greeted by Kadek, Putu, their daughter, sister in law as well as the grandmother. We immediately felt like family. We spent a wonderful day learning, with hands on cooking. We have done cooking classes before where you barely are allowed to cook. Not this one! You are knew deep in chopping and cooking with the family. So enjoyable. The food we made was delicious and recipes were sent home with us. If we are ever in Ubud again we would definitely cook with them again. We had such a fun time we even invited them to our house so we could teach them how to cook italian food! Book your class now, you won’t be disappointed! BTW they pick you up and bring you back to your hotel if you are staying in Ubud-another great service from their family.

This is a must do experience in Bali! We loved every minute with this family. Kadek met us on time at our accommodation in Ubud and then took us to the local market in his hometown of Gianyar. We toured the market and Kadek told us about some of the foods we would be cooking with. Such a cool experience! From there we went to his sister Putu's home, where she and Kadek's wife (Ketut) met us to cook a beautiful Balinese meal. We made seven different traditional Balinese dishes and my partner and I were involved in the chopping and preparing of each dish from the start. They also gave us a sheet with recipes to take with us. Putu and Ketut were wonderful teachers and showed us how everything was to be prepared. Afterwards, Kadek took us to his home to see his garden, which was such a treat. This family was amazing, warm and so welcoming. This was the highlight of our trip to Bali. We can't wait to come back!
