Meet Paulo

Paulo is a hotel management graduate who has worked in the hospitality industry for many years. Passionate about his profession, Paulo believes that authentic local cuisine must be at the center of every hospitality experience. Paulo's wife, Susana, is an elementary school teacher who shares Paulo's passion for cooking, and she devotes most of her free time to cooking and trying new culinary experiences.

From an early age, Paulo and Susana were taught how to cook by their mothers, two lovers of authentic Portuguese cuisine. Throughout the years Paulo and Susana became excellent home chefs, and they are excited about sharing their Portuguese culinary and cultural traditions with others from around the world.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

Cooking experience: (2-10 guests) Take a short ride from the city center of Lisbon to get to Paulo and Susana's house in Apelacao, a quiet and open neighborhood in the outskirts of Lisbon for your Portuguese cooking class. You will meet a very warm and welcoming host family in their traditional Portuguese home. Paulo, Susana and their two children will be expecting you with some classic Portuguese appetizers and a glass of local Portuguese wine. Expect a very local and authentic culinary experience in a family atmosphere with Paulo and Susana sharing lots about Lisbon's history, culture and food scene.

After a welcome appetizer and drink, you will join Paulo and Susan in their kitchen for your Lisbon cooking class and learn to prepare two traditional Portuguese dishes. Learn the techniques involved in cooking Portuguese cuisine during your cooking class which will last about two hours. Later join your hosts at the dining table to enjoy the meal you helped prepare. Unless you have a particular preference, your hosts will choose to surprise you with their own selection of favorite local dishes - two appetizers and mains. Your meal will conclude with Portuguese dessert.

Notes: A glass of wine is included in the cost of your experience.

Please note that lunch experiences are only available on weekends. During the week Paulo and Susana are only available for dinner experiences since they work during the week.

Languages spoken: English, Spanish, Portuguese

This was perfect. There's always a small degree of risk with things like this because our family and the host family might not click. That said, I was pretty confident because of previous reviews. It turned out perfect for our Sunday lunch. The home is about 25 minutes from the tourist centre of Lisbon, which makes it feel like you are in the countryside but still quick to get to. The family totally got it in terms of making it work for our two kids (11 and 7). They were a delightful family (husband, wife and adult son) and we all had a great time. It was cool to cook and eat as we went. Couldn't recommend more highly.

Paulo and Susannah (and their lovely son) welcomed us into their home and made a memorable evening for us. They are wonderful hosts, chefs, teachers, and now friends. We enjoyed every second and felt at home, abroad. Highly recommend this service and these folks. Don’t forget to ask for rice pudding.

Absolutely delicious and heartwarming experience! As always, our Traveling Spoon was the best part of our trip to Portugal! Paulo and his family were such a joy to spend time with, and the meal we made together was incredible. We got to know them personally and learn more about Portugal and its history. There were so many amazing courses that we could barely walk out afterwards. I’ve already made Susana’s cake recipe since returning to the States. And on top of that, they have a cute dog... :)

I felt like I was part of a big family as soon as I was greeted by Paulo and Susanah. Upon entering the kitchen, I could already see how much food they had prepare for me and my partner. We finished cooking the cod cakes and pan-fried the fresh clams. Paulo, who knew a ton about wines - apparently, he used to work for a wine company, took us to his wine cellar and talked about what we would be drinking that day. We easily had a 5-course meal with multiple dishes in each course. Susanah and Paulo knew my partner and I couldn't eat too much dairy, so instead of Susanah's famous rice pudding, she made us an apple tart instead, which was super thoughtful and sweet. It seemed like we talked for hours at the dinner table and was joined by Paulo and Susanah's son as well. Topics like football, food, the Spanish (haha), the history of Portugal, travel -- really anything you would talk about with your family, you could do here. It was really that kind of "European" eat, drink and laugh atmosphere that you imagine. These experiences are so memorable for me and I really thank my hosts for such a wonderful and delicious experience.
