Meet Raghav

Raghav was born to a former royal family of Udaipur with lineage dating back over 1400 years. He lives with his beautiful children and wife in their ancestral home with magnificent views of the valley. Raghav is semi-retired and is very passionate about horse riding and polo (he even plays with the Indian Army Polo team!). Having served in the Indian army with an honors in history, Raghav has some very interesting stories to share. In Raghav’s family, cooking is treated as an art acquired over many generations, and they can truly boast about some of the finest royal recipes in the country. Their chefs also fondly called as 'Rasordar' prepares the food with locally-sourced, organic produce and authentic flavors for a holistic culinary experience.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (2-20 guests) Your experience takes place in Raghav’s ancestral home which is an 18th century castle. It is a beautiful, palace-like home decorated with historic artifacts and has a large courtyard with a bird’s eye view of the city. The courtyard also has an 18th century family temple that has been restored beautifully, adding to the elegant charm of their home. While you sip on your welcome drink Raghav will give you great insight into Mewari and Rajasthani food, culture and traditions. Later, join Rahgav and his family (if they are around) for a fine dining experience at their dining table and share authentic dishes prepared by the family chef. You might enjoy dishes like Mewari khata (gram flour curry), bhindi fatehshahi (okra prepared for late Maharana of Udaipur), safed murgh (chicken in white curry) and laal maas (mutton curry prepared in a sauce of yogurt and hot spices) served with rice or roti (flatbread). End your meal with a sweet dessert like gulabi kheer (creamy, rose-flavored rice pudding) or makhani rasgulla (ball-shaped dumplings cooked in light syrup made of sugar).

Cooking experience: (2-10 guests) Your Udaipur cooking class will be conducted by the resident chef, who has worked with Raghav and his family for the many years and knows all the secret family recipes! He will reveal a few closely-guarded secrets behind the Mewar cuisine of Indian royalty. The royal cuisine of Mewar is usually simple and rustic yet flavorful and makes heavy use of dried and fresh fruits, spices, meat, and seasonal vegetables. In your one-hour hands-on cooking class, you will join the family chef to make dishes such as hare bater (farmed quails in a green curry) and dal chitrakoot (lentils from Chittor) and will learn to combine local produce with old traditional recipes.

Notes: Raghav can offer vegetarian meals on request. As they run a home stay, you might see other guests while you are there, however your Traveling Spoon experience will be private. Please note that their home does have animals; in case you are allergic to or scared of dogs or cats, please let Raghav know and he can keep them away during your experience.

PERSONALLY VETTED REVIEW
A Traveling Spoon ambassador visited this host. Here is their personal review.

Raghav and his wife welcomed us with open arms and hearts. We had a long, interesting conversation on food, history, culture while we shared snacks and a very unique welcome drink. Then we were introduced to the family chef, with whom we had a very informative cooking demo, followed by dinner. We were served some truly authentic regional dishes made with local produce, which was outstanding! Raghav is very warm, hospitable and knowledgeable; we felt right at home and were so comfortable throughout the experience. We highly recommend this unique experience to everyone visiting Udaipur!
