Meet Angelina

An active food blogger and member of the Slow Food movement, Angelina is a fourth-generation professional cook and passionate about sharing traditional Greek recipes with travelers. Entirely self-taught, Angelina has over 25 years of experience cooking, writing for food magazines and newspapers, food-blogging and offering cooking classes. Angelina's interest in cooking was inspired by her grandmother and mother cooking in their Greek kitchen. She was brought up with a variety of food cooked fresh everyday and because she loves meeting people, she started to entertain guests. Angelina has studied sociology and communication, traveled around the world and it was during her time living in South Korea in the 90s that she first started offering Greek cooking classes. She hasn't stopped since and with her entertaining style makes each class a very pleasant experience.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (2-20 guests) Enjoy a traditional Greek meal at Angelina's dining table or outdoors on her balcony when the weather is good. You will start with ouzo, the traditional Greek aperitif and small plates of mezze (Greek appetizers) such as taramosalata, saganaki (a soft, fried cheese), tzatziki (yoghurt dip) or gigantes plaki (giant beans in a tomato sauce) or hand rolled dolmades and fresh bread followed by a Greek salad, a main dish such as a spanakopita (phyllo pastries) or whole fish or lamb and potatoes or garides saganaki (prawns in fresh tomato sauce with feta cheese) or chicken giouvetsi with orzo, or for vegetarians or vegans and upon request, revithada (a chickpea dish from the island of Sifnos, slow-cooked in a clay pot). For dessert, you will try an easy version of baklava with pistachios and walnuts.

Cooking experience: (2-20 guests) Join Angelina in the modern kitchen of her beautiful home for an Athens cooking class and learn to cook traditional Greek dishes. Angelina likes to use seasonal and organic produce whenever possible. During your hands-on Greek cooking class in Athens learn to make a traditional Greek mezze dish such as melitzanosalata (eggplant dip) or taramosalata (appetizer made with fish roe). Then proceed to prepare a main such as spanakopita (savory spinach pie) or chicken with orzo in fresh tomato sauce or roast and garlicky leg of lamb with rosemary and lemon or shrimps saganaki in tomato and feta sauce. You can expect to cook for about an hour before you sit down to share the traditional Greek meal you helped prepare with Angelina. This is the perfect Athens culinary experience to immerse yourself in the rich flavors of Greece!

Notes: Angelina has little availability during the summer as she works in Mykonos from April to October.

During the warmer months (June - October) your meals might start a bit later to avoid the heat of the day.

Languages spoken: English, Greek, Spanish

PERSONALLY VETTED REVIEW
A Traveling Spoon ambassador visited this host. Here is their personal review.

The minute I walked into Angelina's flat I felt I was at a friend's place, over for lunch. A friend I hadn't seen for a long time. We conversed pretty much about everything, dreams and plans, food and travels. It felt right. Along with a glass of wine (served at just the right temperature), that's what great food does, it sets free your tongue!

We did our class with Angelina and it was amazing. Angelina's husband picked us up at our Athens hotel and took us to their beautiful home in Athens. Once we arrived Angelina welcomed us and immediately connected with my wife on cooking and they set out on their adventure. Angelina had a number of dishes planned and my wife had so much fun preparing the meals with her. And the food was all absolutely delicious. My wife and I would do this again in a heartbeat if we come to Athens again. It was so much fun.

What an amazing evening with Chef Angelina! We had a group of two families with adult children, and Chef Angelina hosted us at her beautiful home, with spectacular views of the sea and countryside. She had prepared some delicious appetizers; and then we all set to work in the kitchen and she taught us some modernized traditional Greek recipes, and everyone participated to prepare a fantastic meal. Angelina is a very capable chef, an excellent teacher, an entertaining storyteller, and a gracious host. This interactive cooking lesson was absolutely the highlight of our trip, and an shared experience our families will always cherish.

The evening with Angelina was so memorable. She took great care to provide to our personal preferences and to give us recipes that were both traditional and using ingredients we can find back in the US. The food was delicious and her obvious love of cooking was reflected in every bite. What a marvelous conversationalist and gracious hostess. Highly recommend.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this cooking class! Angelina was inviting, knowledgeable and is an amazing chef. She not only taught us about the recipes but also the history of the recipes and answered our many questions. This was a highlight of our trip. We had a wonderful evening. So excited to make these recipes at home and relive the experience. Extremely Highly Recommend!

The cooking class was phenomenal, Angie was so kind and took the time to adapt the class and recipes due to some of our preferences. The food was fantastic and was full for the whole day! I will definitely be using the recipes at home, she made sure to use ingredients we could find at home and gave history / knowledge of every dish we made/ ate. I’ve done a lot of cooking classes at multiple locations, but this was by far the best. It was a great experience and Angie made us feel at ease and was eager for us to get involved. Thank you Angie for a great day!

Angelina welcomed us with open arms to her beautiful villa that overlooked the sea. We were a mother daughter group of 6 and Angelina had her daughter join us which was so sweet. The food we prepared was delicious and sitting together to enjoy our creations was like dining with old friends. We did not want to leave. The recipes were delicious, classic yet simple to make. Angelina’s husband had the fire going which created a warm and inviting setting and joined us for dinner as well and it was so nice to sit and chat. We highly recommend this to anyone wanting a cooking experience.

Dinner with Angelina is really something very special. We had been looking forward to it, and it turned out to be even better than we had expected! Angelina was so sweet. She shared secrets of Greek cooking passed down by her Ya Ya, and explained everything with such ease that I am confident I could recreate the dishes myself. Everything she made was the best we had ever tasted, better than any restaurant, and the experience is something we will remember forever.

Such a fun experience! My husband and I took a class with Angelina our first night in Athens - and what an awesome way to start our trip! Angelina and her husband are wonderful people. Incredibly welcoming and kind. We prepared many Greek dishes, some that my husband and I drooled over. The food was so good, the conversation was joyful, and the overall experience was one to remember. Would highly recommend!

Angelina was absolutely phenomenal! My husband and I enjoyed her company tremendously and it was so nice to learn how to make authentic traditional Greek lunch dishes. She also offered many demos and hands on time to really help cook what we were eating. She answered all of our many questions and conversation was impeccable. This was my third visit to Greece and I will definitely visit Angelina again during all our trips to Athens! We hope to stay in touch! Her home is absolutely beautiful especially the fresh lemon trees. Angelina even arranged a cab for pick up. The food was amazing and she went above and beyond answering all of our questions. Definitely a unique idea when traveling throughout Greece! Next time we hope to do a market visit with her and perhaps dinner!
