Meet Remigius

Remmy is a development activist, who works with local communities to improve nutrition for rural children, recruit village game scouts, enforce protection for the wildlife in the area and help build lodges to increase employment through tourism. In 2016, Remmy started his own Eco Camp in the village, and over the years, he has hosted travelers and volunteers from all over the world. The Eco Camp was set up as a space to accommodate volunteers who came to work on different projects, - safe water, education, solar energy, reforestation and health care. Currently Remmy also offers accommodation and cooking classes to travelers, who are interested in learning more about the Maasai people, their culture and traditions.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

Cooking experience: (1-5 guests) Your cooking experience takes place at Eco Camp, a wonderful place to enjoy nature and rural life learn about the local community! It is surrounded by Mikumi National Park and located in Lukwambe - a small village between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro on the bank of Ngerengere River. Eco Camp is 150 km from Dar es Salaam and 45 km from Morogoro. For easy access, Remmy or a person appointed by him will pick you up in Bwawani (located directly on the highway between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro, the Eco Camp is 17km from Bwawani). All the food served at the camp is organic, seasonal and freshly cooked! They use fresh fruits and vegetables from their own garden, whenever possible.

Begin your food experience with a small tour of the area and soak in the beautiful landscape, smell and sounds. Then join Remmy and his family in the cooking area for a hands-on cooking class in Morogoro. Cooking is a community affair where everyone comes together to prep and cook fresh meals from scratch. Traditional cooking methods are used and you will help prepare three dishes in a 2-hour class. Learn to make matoke (dish prepared by roasting green bananas on charcoal), pilau (spiced rice) or beans cooked in coconut stew, and sweet potatoes cooked with peanuts and cassava leaf sauce. After cooking, sit down on mats on the floor or at the table and share the meal you helped prepare, you can also eat using your hands - like the locals do!

Market visit: (1-5 guests) Visit the local, village market (available everyday except for Fridays) with Remmy during your market tour. This is the market where all the local villagers buy fruits, spices, corn flour, wheat flour, fresh banana, Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc. The market is 1km away, so you can either walk there or travel by motorcycle or car, depending on the group size. At the market, Remmy will be your guide introducing you to locally grown ingredients, how they are used, and will also help you interact with vendors when you buy ingredients for your class.

Notes: Vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and halal meals can be provided, if informed in advance. Please note that this is a very simple, modest experience that takes place in a rural village. An excellent opportunity to spend time with the local community in a traditional setting without many modern amenities. If adventure, spending time in nature, traveling off the beaten path and sustainable travel interests you, then this cooking class in Morogoro is the perfect experience for you!

Please note that there may be other volunteers present during your experience.
