Meet Kremena and Georgi

Kremena has been cooking ever since she was a little girl - she credits her mother for teaching her almost everything she knows about cooking. Kremena hosts with her husband, Georgi, a pharmacist who works in clinical trials. Kremena is a very passionate home cook and was recently selected to be on a famous TV show! She likes to cook traditional Bulgarian dishes such as soups and salads, but also likes to experiment and try new recipes. Georgi does not cook, but he is an extremely supportive husband, who is very proud of his wife’s cooking. He is her number one fan and says about Kremena’s cooking, “Kremena is very detail oriented so her meals are not only delicious but also a piece of art.” Together they look forward to hosting people from all over the world and sharing their country's food and traditions while learning about other cultures.

“We love traveling and have always met great hosts and now we have the opportunity to return the favor and be a host!”

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-4 guests) Kremena and Georgi welcome you with warm smiles into their small and simple but lovely apartment in central Sofia. After you get to know each other, Kremena and Georgi will give you an introduction to Bulgarian food and its traditions. Then sit down at the dining table for your authentic home-cooked Bulgarian meal. Your menu might include dishes such as shkembe chorba (traditional tripe soup), shopska (a Bulgarian cold salad prepared using fresh and seasonal vegetables) and kapama (slow-cooked meat in a clay-sealed casserole) or another traditional Bulgarian main dish with cabbage and pork. Your meal concludes with a dessert such as banitsa (pie) or Bulgarian yogurt served with homemade strawberry jam.

Cooking experience: (1-4 guests) During your 2-hour hands-on Sofia cooking class, Kremena will show you how to prepare three Bulgarian dishes from scratch. Help Kremena in the kitchen and learn to make a traditional Bulgarian soup, salad and dessert before you sit down together at their table to enjoy the meal you helped prepare.

Market visit: (1-4 guests) Kremena and Georgi take you to either Georgi Kirkov or Dimitar Petkov during your private market tour. You will meet Kremena and Georgi at home and then drive together to the market. Both local markets sell seasonal fruits, vegetables, meat, milk, different kinds of cheese and local spices. Walk through the market and learn about regional and seasonal ingredients used in Bulgarian cuisine before you purchase a few ingredients for your cooking class.

Notes: Kremena and Georgi can offer vegetarian meals on request.

If you want to have a traditional lunch/dinner with a modern Bulgarian family and yet to experience it like a local, then Kremena and Georgi’s home is the right place for you. I was warmly welcomed into their home and we had a lovely time together till the very last moment. The food was various - from fresh salads, through the main dish which was a traditional meal to an exceptional dessert. I even took part in preparing the dessert, which was also very cool. The dessert was very simple but so good that I had 2 portions of it! Also, the spread with mackerel was a masterpiece. The only thing I did not like about the experience was that I had to leave :)

It was an amazing evening with Kremena and George! I visited Sofia for a weekend trip and what I wanted to do most there was learning Bulgarian cooking, and the class was absolutely right choice! Although my booking request was right a day before, George generously accepted my request. (thank you so much!) As I expected, Bulgarian dishes used a lot of yogurt and this is what I wanted to experience to see how it taste like. It was so fresh, tasteful and great aroma in our cooking result! Kremena and George kindly supported my cooking and shared our experiences during the class. Oh also Bulgarian wine matched the dinner, too :) There are a couple of food tours in Sofia, but for me tasting is not only important but also actually learning how to cook them because cooking is one of the best way to learn the culture of region. Kremena and George are the best to learn from them. Thank you so much for everything there and souvenirs!
