Meet Masato

Masato, also known as Max lived in New York for 25 years, then moved to Japan in 2010. He teaches the locals English and teaches the expats Japanese. He has had many interesting jobs in the food industry - worked as sushi chef in New York, owned a Hawaiian café in Osaka and currently runs a Takoyaki bar close to Dotonbori. Masato was interested in cooking since high school and loves to cook for his family every day. He is excited to share his passion and teach Japanese cuisine to those who are curious to learn about the ingredients, cooking techniques, culinary traditions and culture. This Japanese cooking class in Osaka is suitable for beginners, families, children, couples – Masato’s aim is to show you how easy cooking is and help you explore undiscovered skills, at his professional cooking studio. On days that Masato is not available, an equally wonderful chef colleague will host you.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

Cooking experience: (1-10 guests) Osaka is famous for being a culinary haven, so it’s the perfect place to take a cooking class and learn how to prepare traditional Japanese foods. Masato started his restaurant career introducing Hawaiian food to the Japanese, and now he’s introducing Takoyaki, Osaka's signature dish, to travelers visiting Japan. In your 3 hours hands-on Japanese cooking class, learn to make 2-3 dishes from scratch. If you choose the sushi class, learn to make maki sushi, chirashi sushi and California roll. If you choose the Osaka course, learn to make takoyaki (a ball-shaped Japanese snack made of a wheat flour-based batter) with a takoyaki maker. Please let Masato know your menu preference at the time of booking your Osaka cooking class. After cooking, enjoy the meal you helped prepare which will be served with Japanese green tea. On days that Masato is not available, his partner chef will host you.

Market visit: (1-10 guests) Meet your host at the train station and walk 5-7 minutes to the nearby Karahori Shotengai market, an Osaka landmark. A covered shopping street filled with small stalls and shops selling vegetables, fresh food and small souvenirs. It is a great place to learn about Japanese ingredients and condiments, you can also buy souvenirs to take back home. Start this 30-minute tour at a nearby local supermarket, then walk through the fish and local vegetable and fruit market with your host Masato, who will share information on the local produce and how the ingredients are used in Japanese cooking. You might snack on some dangos (dumplings) or dorayaki (pancake) and visit a traditional dashi store before returning to the cooking studio to cook and eat.

Notes: Max can accommodate lactose free, gluten free, vegetarian and vegan diets, on request. Please let him know if you have any dietary restrictions in advance, while booking your Osaka cooking class online.

Great personable experience! We learned a lot about Japanese culture while cooking three separate dishes and miso soup. Samurai Max is the perfect host. He contacted us ahead of time for preferences and made sure we had no allergy issues. By explaining the seasonings and sauces we will be able to replicated what we learned. We had teens that he engaged throughout the process, making it fun for them. His cooking studio is close to other major activities and we did a photo shoot with another vendor after to complete the evening. He went the extra mile to make sure my son got what he wanted at nearby market too!
