Meet Tanya

Tanya recently retired and moved to Mexico from Canada in 2020. She can't think of a better to spend her free time than to share her passion for cooking, her home and her food with friends, family and traveler’s. The kitchen has always been Tanya’s happy place and cooking sparks joy for her. So being able to share this passion with other like-minded people is something she is very excited about. She learned to cook authentic Mexican dishes from her friends and neighbors, who were so happy and kind to share their family recipes with her. Living in Mexico for the last 2 1/2 years has allowed Tanya to perfect these recipes and with a little twist of her own she is happy to share a Mexican meal using the freshest seafood and produce available.

When we asked Tanya why she would like to become a Traveling Spoon host, this is what she said, “Food is my love language and I would love to share our home, community and food with friends we haven’t met yet!”

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-4 guests) Tanya lives with her husband, Calvin, in a newly renovated home in the heart of an authentic Mexican community in Ixtapa. She would love to share her love of food and community with travelers, so they can gain insight into Mexican ingredients, culture, cuisine and culinary traditions. She will cook and share a fusion Mexican meal using family recipes she collected from friends and neighbors. A few dishes that you might try in Tanya’s home are guacamole, spicy shrimp tacos with mango salsa or shrimp ceviche tostada's and pico de gallo or chicken enchiladas with salsa and chocolate avocado mousse or carlota de limón (Mexican lemon icebox cake). A fresh paloma, a tequila based cocktail will be served if you’ve paid for the optional alcohol.

Cooking experience: (1-4 guests) In your Puerto Vallarta cooking class, you will join Tanya in her open, home kitchen to cut and prep ingredients to cook a Mexican meal. The cooking experience with Tanya is beginner level, learn to cook Mexican dishes that are easy to replicate at home. In your one hour class, learn to make an appetizer or dessert and a main dish. You will learn to make spicy shrimp tacos with mango salsa or shrimp ceviche tostada's and pico de gallo or chicken enchiladas with salsa and guacamole or carlota de limón (Mexican lemon icebox cake) or chocolate avocado mousse. After cooking, help Tanya plate all the food that you will share together at the dining table.

Notes: Tanya can offer a vegetarian meal, on request. Please inform her in advance if you have any dietary restrictions, while booking this Mexican cooking class in Puerto Vallarta online.

We had a wonderful time with Tanya learning about her life in Puerto Vallarta and the local food she has discovered. The food prep was fun and instructional and the low-key vibe was perfect. We highly recommend.

From the start Tanya was inviting, warm and personable. She invited us into her beautiful home and the kitchen was very well set up to teach. We enjoyed some great drinks while she taught her class and let us participate. The food was delicious! We had a ton of fun, laughs and enjoyed a great dinner. If you’re looking for a unique and fun night out, off the boat or away from the resorts, I’d highly recommend an evening here.

Tanya was the perfect host, charming insightful and a great chef. She has a beautiful home and gorgeous kitchen. She explained the menu, which included a refreshing Paloma over ice, guacamole (she invited me to make it and was open to hands on), chicken enchiladas and a delicious Mexican Lime Icebox Cake. What was of particular value was the fact she made the enchilada sauce from scratch. The food was delicious, the atmosphere warm (beautiful courtyard) and great conversation. While she lives in Ixtapa, part of Puerto Vallarta, the drive was only 20 minutes and the Uber very reasonable. I highly recommend this cooking class.

You can always cancel your booking and receive a full refund 48 hours or more before your experience. If you have other questions you can also email us at reservations@travelingspoon.com.

Most of our hosts are able to accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies, including vegetarian and gluten free options. For vegetarian travelers, we have an icon on each host profile to indicate whether that host can also offer a fully vegetarian menu. There is a section in the booking form to note any allergies or dietary restrictions which will be sent directly to your host.

Some hosts offer alcohol as an optional add-on for travelers who are of legal drinking age. Pricing for alcohol is visible on the host profile page and includes one to two glasses of wine, beer or local alcohol.

Have a flight or other tour planned and can’t make the timing provided? If the timing listed on the host’s profile doesn’t work for you, our hosts can often accommodate timing changes. Because all of our experiences are private our hosts are happy to tailor experiences to meet your travel needs. Simply note your request in the booking process.

This information will be emailed to you to the email address you used to sign up, and will also be visible on your Traveling Spoon profile.

All prices are noted per person prices unless otherwise specified. Transportation is typically charged on a per car basis. Children aged 5-11 are 50% off, and infants aged 0-4 are free. Hosts set their own prices and Traveling Spoon marks up the experiences; on average hosts receive over 70% of the price paid by the traveler.

100% of Traveling Spoon experiences are private! Just you and your host and host’s family.

Hosts typically respond to booking inquiries within 72 hours. If for some reason you have not heard from your host or if you have any questions you can always contact us at reservations@travelingspoon.com.

Your safety and security are our top priority. To ensure this, Traveling Spoon personally vets 100% of all hosts, including an in-person host visit, to ensure each host and experience meets our strict quality requirements.

Some hosts offer transportation as an optional add-on for travelers. Typically this is round trip transportation with pick up and drop off at your hotel. Pricing is quoted per car. Specific instructions for transportation will be provided in your confirmation details when your booking is confirmed.

Many of our hosts accommodate solo travelers. You can see if a host accepts solo travelers by looking at the traveler range found next to the experience descriptions on the host profile (indicated by the numbers in parentheses next to "In-home meal", "Cooking experience" and "Market visit").

Most of our Traveling Spoon experiences are incredibly family friendly and can accommodate infants and children. If a host is unable to accommodate children that will be noted in the “Notes” section of their profile. Our child pricing policy is children aged 5-11 are 50% off, and infants aged 0-4 are free.
