Meet Kadek and Putu

Kadek and Putu are siblings who bring the flavors of their childhood to life through their Ubud cooking experience, offering travelers an authentic taste of Bali. They grew up in a picturesque village in Gianyar, just 15 minutes from the Elephant Cave Temple (Goa Gajah), surrounded by rice paddies, ravines, and forests. Kadek, with his warm and welcoming nature, will pick you up from your hotel in Ubud and drive you on a scenic 40-minute journey to his family’s traditional compound in Bali’s serene countryside. Putu, a professional cook with a deep passion for Balinese food, prepares dishes that reflect her roots. Together, Kadek and Putu invite travelers into their family home for a unique culinary experience, where they can learn the art of Balinese cooking, explore culinary traditions, and enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

Cooking experience: (1-12 guests) Experience authentic Balinese cooking in Ubud with siblings Kadek and Putu. After hotel pickup, you’ll be welcomed into their family compound for a 2-hour hands-on cooking class. Begin by exploring their home garden, where you’ll discover tropical fruits and vegetables, then enjoy a refreshing coconut water or fresh juice like mango or passion fruit. In Putu’s simple kitchen, learn step by step how to prepare classic Balinese dishes from scratch —such as chicken satay, vegetable soup, sweet potato rice, tofu or tuna wrapped in banana leaves, and black sticky rice pudding or fried banana with palm sugar. You’ll use fresh local ingredients, grind spice pastes, and cook dishes that Balinese families have enjoyed for generations. After class, sit down to share the delicious meal you’ve created together, accompanied by local beer. This intimate Ubud cooking experience is the perfect way to connect with Balinese culture, learn authentic recipes, and enjoy the warm hospitality of a local family.

Market visit: (1-12 guests) Join Kadek for an authentic Balinese culinary experience that begins with convenient pick-up in Ubud before you visit the lively Gianyar Market, one of Bali’s most vibrant traditional markets where locals shop daily for fresh produce, spices, and herbs. Explore the colorful stalls as Kadek introduces you to unique tropical fruits, seasonal vegetables, and the essential ingredients that give Balinese food its rich flavor. After your market visit, Kadek will drive you to his home for a hands-on Balinese cooking class.

Notes: Prices include round-trip transport only within Ubud. Please be sure to include your hotel name on the reservation form so your host can arrange for your pick-up.

If you are staying outside of Ubud there will be an additional charge for transportation. Please contact us at reservations@travelingspoon.com for details.

What an amazing day! We spent seven hours with two of the most welcoming and lovely people. The gem of this visit was how culturally immersive the experience was. Not only did we learn about the culinary life of a Balinese family, but we learned so much about the culture as well. My husband is not much of a foodie but he enjoyed it as much as I did. The food was incredibly flavorful and we had such a lovely time chatting with Kadek and Putu. If you're on the fence about booking, don't hesitate. You won't regret having this experience.

This was such an amazing experience and would encourage everyone who goes to Bali to do it. We had so much fun learning about the ingredients that go into the meals and the preparation of the food. We had lots of different conversations and many laughters. The star of the show was of course the part where we shared the meals. I really loved this, and grateful for Kadek and his wife for hosting us 😊 This is an experience we will never forget, you were so warm and welcoming. 😊

A bustling market where haggling is a must and a sport. Busy streets with many stalls selling the same thing, but you give it to the people. They never become annoying; they remain polite.
