Meet Jose and Luis

Jose and Luis are a couple who were born and raised in Mexico City, and have a shared passion for food, cooking and entertaining. Over the years, they have enjoyed sharing their table with family, friends and strangers, by nurturing them with their food and stories. Luis is an interior designer and is passionate about traditional Mexican craft and simple but unique flavors. Jose is journalist and is passionate about traditional Mexican cooking and celebration of its distinct flavors.

When asked why they would like to be Traveling Spoon hosts, this is what they had to say, “I like to think of cooking as a true way to give affection to others. To receive guests at your table and cook for them is also giving them a little bit of me, of my Mexico through its traditional taste: a slice of sun, a twist of pink, bright flowers, a deep black chocolate, a golden soft tortilla.”

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-10 guests) Jose and Luis are so excited to receive you in their home and put together a table full of color and tradition - have a seat at their dining table and open your mind to a new and heart filled experience. They like to experiment in the kitchen and often combine typical Mexican flavors with healthy alternatives, so that you can enjoy traditional and rich flavors absolutely guilt free! Jose and Luis will present to you three courses, which is their interpretation of Mexican gastronomy. You can expect a flavor journey through comfort food and local traditions. Start your meal with an appetizer such as taco placero or garnachas, followed by sopa conde (a black bean soup), and end your meal with chicken with mole negro from Oaxaca.

Cooking experience: (1-5 guests) Join Jose and Luis in their home kitchen for a hands-on cooking class where you will learn to make 3 dishes in 1.5 hours. Don your aprons and learn to cook garnachas (a traditional dish of fried corn tortillas), molcajete salsa (tomato salsa made using a mortar and pestle) and sopa conde (black bean soup). After you cook together, join Jose and Luis at the dining table to share the meal you helped prepare. Jose and Luis are excited to share their culture through food and offer an authentic/traditional cooking class in Mexico city. They can also accommodate lactose free, gluten free, vegetarian and vegan meals on request in their Mexican cooking class.

Market visit: (1-5 guests) On weekdays you will visit the Mercado 20 de Noviembre. A bustling traditional covered market with stalls for fresh produce, baked goods and local street foods. On weekends you will visit Mercado Alternativo de Tlalpan. Walk through the market will your hosts and stop at their favorite stalls to meet the vendors, learn more about their produce and buy ingredients for your cooking class thereafter (if you've booked a cooking experience as well).

Notes: Jose and Luis can offer lactose free, gluten free, vegetarian and vegan meals on request. Please let them know in advance, while booking the experience online.
