Meet Daniela

Daniela’s love for cooking comes from her father's side of the family, who are very passionate about food and cooking. Later she studied gastronomy at university and owns her own bakery now. She also conducts cooking classes for kids. Apart from food and cooking she enjoys going to the cinema, traveling, and learning about new cultures and cuisines. Daniela is very excited to share her rich Colombian gastronomy and its delicious flavors with travelers.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-9 guests) Daniela will welcome you to her cozy home, which is in a great neighborhood for a delicious Colombian meal and a nice chat with her warm Colombian family. You will surely leave feeling loved listening to their wonderful stories and trying some of their traditional family dishes. Few dishes that you may try are ajiaco (traditional soup) or papa rellena (stuffed potatoes), sudado de muchacho (meat and potato) or arroz con pollo (rice with veggies and chicken) and your meal will end on a sweet note with mazamorra (a traditional dessert made with corn) or arroz con leche (a sweet rice pudding).

Cooking experience: (1-9 guests) Join Daniela and her mother in their home kitchen for a hands-on cooking class. In your Medellin cooking class learn to prepare 2-3 authentic homemade Colombian dishes. Learn to cook an appetizer or dessert and a main dish. The cooking portion of the experience will last for 1-2 hours.

Market visit: (1-9 guests) After you meet Daniela at her home, you will walk to the local market, Mercados Campesino, if its a Sunday. Here they sell a wide variety of local products including fresh fruits and vegetables. On all other days of the week, Daniela will take you to Plaza Minorista, the second biggest market in Medellin. Daniela will teach you about local ingredients used in Colombian cuisine and the history behind the country's diverse food, while you walk through this vibrant market. You will also get a tasting of a few local fruits and street food like buñuelos (cheese fritters) or arepa de choclo, before your 1 hour market tour ends. But if you've also booked a cooking + meal experience, you will pick up few ingredients from the market. And once you're back at Daniela’s home, you will learn how to cook a Colombian meal with her mother, that you will later share together.

Notes: Please note that Daniela cannot offer paid transportation on Fridays.

Daniela and her mother have an amazing personality - very bubbly and welcoming and were happy to answer all our questions about the food, where it was from and the history of Medellin and Colombia. They were great company! The food was great and they live in a very nice, clean and welcoming home. We cooked some fried plantain, which was the best I've ever had!

We had an awesome experience! Daniela helped us make traditional ajiaco soup, arepas and tres leches cake. All of it was delicious!! We were invited into her home and spent the evening cooking and talking with Daniela and her mom Beatriz. They were both lovely and gave us some great recommendations for other things to do in Medellin as well! Highly recommend!

We had an amazing day with Tábata during our cooking class and market tour! This was our first day in Medellin, and she and her mother were wonderful hosts. They took us around the market and showed us where they shop — I even got to purchase some spices and equipment to take home for my own cooking. She bought and array of fruits native to Colombia so we could try them for the fir at time. During the cooking demo, she showed us how to do everything by hand and even gave us some history of Colombia and the recipes we were making. We recommend this class to all of our friends and anyone who visits Medellin!

I really enjoyed this experience as an introduction to Colombian culture. I learned about the Colombian philosophy of “nothing goes to waste”, which we saw evidence of in the market, and which I want to start implementing in my life. Daniela and her mom were wonderful hosts and the home-cooked meal warmed me straight to the heart. We even got to try some local fruits. As a bonus, I learned a lot of Spanish words. Highly recommend this class!

this is my second time having a local food experience with Daniela. She is so knowledgeable and friendly and takes the time to make sure your eating experience is outstanding. We have visited the market for local fruits, had lunch at her home and I walked the farmers market on a Sunday. I highly recommend one her food inspired experiences for anyone who truly wants to taste local Colombian food.
