Meet Diep

Diep (pronounced "Yeep") lives with her husband, young baby, and her parents in a typical family home in Danang. She loves to travel and seeks out traditional dishes when she explores a new place, she believes this is the best way to meet locals, hear their voices, and get to know a place. Hosting with Traveling Spoon is a way for Diep to share her passion for her country’s culture, traditions and cuisine with her guests. She looks forward to introducing Vietnamese home cooking to you!

“We welcome you to our family!”

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (2-8 guests) The family’s cooking revolves around the seasons and they visit the market every day to find the freshest produce, meat and seafood. Diep and her family serve home-style central Vietnamese dishes. Your meal will consist of 3-5 dishes, including a soup like canh chua ca (sour fish soup) or a vegetable soup, a main dish of meat or seafood (like her mother’s muc nhoi thit, stuffed squid), stuffed tofu, stuffed bitter melon, and fresh vegetable dishes such as stir-fried morning glory or chayote, crispy tofu in tomato-egg sauce, and rice. End your meal with fresh, seasonal fruit and tea. The menu will vary based on the season.

Cooking experience: (2-4 guests) Join Diep and her mother Loc in the kitchen to learn how to prepare 2-3 dishes in a cooking demonstration. Because Diep has a small home and kitchen, your preparation of the meal may be limited but Diep will do her best to give you some hands-on experience and teach you to prepare her family recipes. The cooking experience will last about an hour before you gather with the family to enjoy the meal together. Diep and her mother may prepare some of your dishes in advance.

Market visit: (2-4 guests) Meet Diep at her home before you take a taxi to Danang's Dong Da market. This is the large, bustling market that sells a wide variety of products, especially fresh seafood. Diep will introduce you to the local produce and show you some of her favorite vendors and, as you explore you might pick up a few ingredients to be used in the meal. You will spend about 45min-1hr at the market before returning to her home to start cooking.

PERSONALLY VETTED REVIEW
A Traveling Spoon ambassador visited this host. Here is their personal review.

The meal was very good and we ate with her parents and baby. It was fun talking to her and her father about travel and work. She was so pleasant and relaxed, which is very much in tune with the feeling of central Vietnam.

My husband and I had a wonderful time at the private cooking class run by Diep and her mother last week. Diep was waiting for us at the end of her little lane, so we wouldn't get lost after leaving our taxi. It was a really special experience to be in a private Vietnamese home, cooking up a storm! It gave us a real taste of what life is like for the localls. Even Diep's brother got involved, helping us learn the tricks of the trade. I can thoroughly recommend Diep's cooking class.

This was one of our most memorable travel experiences to date. Diep and her mom are amazing hosts who generously welcomed us into their home. We helped them prepare several delicious vegetarian dishes and learned about local Danang culture and cuisine. Highly recommended for anyone looking for an intimate experience with locals.

We had an amazing time over for dinner with Diep. This is less of a cooking class and more like helping a friend make dinner for the family. Everybody was so kind and welcoming to have us in their home. We learned a lot more about life in Vietnam than we would have in any regular class. We helped make dinner (probably more like slowed it down haha) while we chatted about life and Vietnam. Diep is such a great host, she is so friendly and well-travelled and was easy to talk to. We were so relaxed that we almost forgot to leave. I would recommend this to anybody visiting Da Nang.

If you are person who really want to experiece local food in local house, I really recommand it. This tour is not just cooking class but it’s a great chance to share cultures too. You will be in real local atomsphere. Diep and her family were wonderful. Diep and her mother tried to reply my questions about vietnam cooking, even if I had a lot of questions. Now I’m back to my country, and I tried to do vietnamese cooking by myself looking for the ingredients in Asian market. :) thanks a lot to you!

Diep and her family were very warm. They allowed me to choose what dishes I want to cook and completely catered the menu to my interests: pumpkin with peanuts, sour fish soup, stuffed squid with minced pork, and lime leaf grilled chicken. I am extremely thankful for their hospitality. I was also amazed by the vegetable and fruit garden. They shared their home-grown jackfruit with me. I think it would be good if transport was included as part of this package and the recipes were shared electronically.

I loved cooking and chatting with Diep and hanging out with her parents as well. Diep is a lovely person, very easy to talk with. And she did a nice job including me in the preparation of our meal and explaining all the ingredients and preparations. We had so much delicious food! Diep's parents speak less English but were also super kind. Overall a fabulous way to enjoy Danang food and culture.

Diep and her parents were amazing hosts! We had a fantastic time shopping in the market and picking out the fresh ingredients we would enjoy for lunch. We learned so much about the culture and area as well as how to make some fabulous dishes! I highly recommend taking advantage of this opportunity if you are able to when visiting DaNang,

It was a wonderful experience. Like almost every other tourist, I plan to do the cooking class by restaurant. But I found this website and I booked it. It was brilliant. It is the chance that you can see the local life. You can see the local house and meal with local family and even you can talk with local people. You can't get this in other cooking class. The host also good. She taught me very kindly. And host's mother taught me the skill that make spring roll. The food that I made was wonderful and The time that I talk with her was wonderful. I'll do it again when I go to somewhere. I highly recommended this experience.

We joined the market tour and cooking class. The host Diep is very nice and helpful. She invited me to her family house and it is really warm. This is the first time we try the homestyle vietnamese food, which is awesome. I enjoy this class and I will suggest to my friends.

My sister and I booked this cooking class because we not only wanted to learn a bit about cooking Vietnamese food but also about the local culture. This cooking class with Diep delivered on both fronts.Upon arrival at Diep's home, we were met by her and her mother and offered refreshing coconut drinks. These drinks were a welcomed reprieve from the hot day in Da Nang. We spent a moment chatting about our families and where we are from before getting to the fun part ... Cooking!Diep's mother kindly began some of the food preparation already, and motioned us to step in and play the role of chef. We learned that the Vietnamese cuisine is highly focused on herbs for flavor - mint, lemongrass, tamarind, basil, etc. - a very healthy and flavorful way of cooking :) My sister and I had the opportunity with helping rolling spring rolls and helping with the fish soup, among other things. Under the expert guidance of Diep and her mother, the dishes turned out beautifully and tasted wonderfully! The food was so good and the variety of dishes were plentiful - definitely a meal fit for a king and we wished we had bigger stomachs.Once lunch was ready, Diep's father joined us. Diep's father speaks many languages and is very friendly. We discussed everyday topics during our meal, such as work and travel, and my sister and I felt quite a home even though we had just met Diep and her parents. Upon conclusion of the meal, Diep's mother offered us the juiciest oranges, and Diep's father brought us some avocado tea, a tea that aids in digestion. The avocado tea was new to us, and one of the best things about travelling is to learn something new. The tea was mild in taste and a wonderful way to end a delicious meal.Towards the end of our visit, we met Diep's brother. He helped us take some photos to capture our experience and to solidify our memories for years to come. We wanted to write this review and personally thank Diep and her family for such a warm welcome, a delicious meal, and an all-around fun experience. Diep and her family's hospitality is truly exemplary of the warmth and kindness of the Vietnamese people. We hope to visit to Vietnam again soon!

Diep Le and her family were wonderful. I learned some cooking tricks but mostly, we enjoyed the way this family made us feel right at home. We probably lingered longer than we expected because we were so relaxed. The meal that was prepared and presented was excellent. This was the real deal.

Diep met me at my hotel and we went to a market close to the hotel which was a bit smaller but nice for that reason - and the usual vendors and activity were abundant. She’s bubbly and adorable and her energy makes the experience with her special. We went to her parents home to do the cooking. What I loved about the experience with Diep, was meeting and having lunch with her mom, dad and brother at their home- which you can see in the photos is a nice landed home with a garden and even a few animals. They are proud to offer ‘a little bit of the countryside in town.’ The food was good and the experience was rich and it was great to meet this woman and her family it gave me a solid cultural experience.
