Growing up in Mauritius, Yashna's family is very fond of cooking and entertaining friends and family. She is now excited to share her Mauritian gastronomical and cultural heritage with travelers visiting the island. Yashna is an art therapist and an educator who loves meeting new people and exploring new cultures. She believes the best way to experience the real Mauritius is in the heart of a local's home having a lovely exchange over a home-cooked meal.
When asked why she enjoys hosting, Yashna replied “Mauritians are very hospitable people. I want to share our diverse culture and gastronomical richness with travelers.”
Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.
In-home meal: (1-8 guests) Yashna lives with her parents and brothers in a beautiful home located just 10 minutes from the airport. The cuisine she cooks is fresh and seasonal - she uses vegetables from her garden and freshly caught fish. The cuisine of Mauritius is a blend of Chinese, European and Indian influences. Join Yashna and her family (when they around) at the dining table for an authentic Mauritian meal. Your menu might include dishes such as a seasonal salad, fish curry and flatbread or rice. You will conclude your meal with fresh fruit or sagoo (tapioca pudding).
Cooking experience: (1-8 guests) For your cooking class in Mauritius, join Yashna in her home kitchen to learn to cook her family recipes that have been passed down through generations. Before you begin cooking, you will tour Yashna's backyard garden where she grows vegetables, fruits and herbs, some of which you will use in your cooking. Your hands-on Mauritian cooking class lasts 1.5 hours during which you will learn to make two dishes from scratch - an appetizer and a main dish such as fish curry. After cooking, enjoy the meal you helped cook with Yashna at the dining table.
Food tour: (1-4 guests) Mauritius Food Tour: A Culinary Journey Through Mahebourg! Discover the vibrant flavors and rich cultural history of Mauritius with a guided food tour through Mahebourg, the island’s first town, established by French settlers under Governor Mahé de Labourdonnais. As you explore the charming streets of Mahebourg, you’ll get to taste Mauritian street food, offering a unique blend of culinary traditions shaped by Chinese, Indian, and Creole influences. A few things that you might try are minn bwi manguak (a savory noodle dish with sea shells, a beloved staple of Mauritian-Chinese cuisine) or bol 5 (steamed dumplings inspired by traditional Chinese flavors) , briyani (aromatic rice and spiced meat, reflecting the rich heritage of the Mauritian Muslim community) or dhol-pouri & chana-pouri (soft flatbreads filled with yellow split peas, a flavorful legacy of Indian immigrants), merveille (a local sweet delicacy unique to Mahebourg) or manioc biscuit (crunchy tapioca biscuits, crafted only in Mahebourg using age-old methods). Join us for this immersive food experience in Mauritius and savor the diverse flavors that tell a story one bite at a time!
Notes: Yashna's home is 10 minute drive from the international airport. She can accommodate a vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and halal diet on request. Please inform her in advance if you have any dietary restrictions or allergies, while booking your Mauritius cooking class online.
