Meet Lynne

An avid cook and entertainer, Lynne was inspired by her parents who were both excellent cooks, and has been in the specialty food and wine industry for decades. Lynne prefers eating at home than going out on most occasions as she finds home cooked food to often taste better than restaurant food. Lynne has fond memories of her family’s Sunday food tradition of eating duck or pheasant that her father hunted. Her mother learned to cook by watching Julia Childs & Jacques Pepin on PBS and perusing an assortment of cookbooks. Lynne says that she has been cooking farm to table meals before it was a thing. She has always had a small herb and vegetable garden and shopped at local farmers’ markets. Fresh and high quality ingredients are essential to her cuisine. Lynne offers Mediterranean inspired cuisine that is flavorful and simple – she tends to use 12 or fewer ingredients in her meals as she is keen to showcase the fresh taste of each ingredient. Lynne and her husband live in a great space in Detroit that they enjoy sharing with friends. The best part of hosting for her is meeting new people from all over the world.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

Cooking experience: (2-10 guests) Meet your host Lynne at her home in Detroit, a unique residence that used to be a bank built in the 1920s with a lovely patio. Sip on a refreshing drink as your host shares stories about living in Detroit before joining her in her kitchen, a wide open contemporary space. Learn to cook a Mediterranean inspired seasonal meal. As much as possible, Lynne uses fresh, local produce from her vegetable garden or that she purchases from farmer’s markets. Detroit has the oldest, largest continuously running farmers’ market that she is a regular at. Lynne has subscribed to cooking magazines for decades and uses those recipes as inspiration but tends to puts her own creative touch on the dishes that you will be cooking. During your hands-on cooking class, learn to knead, roll and grill flatbread, create a delicious salad and learn techniques involved in making sauces that accompany your main dish. A very encouraging and confidence-inspiring cook, Lynne encourages people to cook based on what you taste, see and smell. She is great at showing you how you can substitute ingredients. You will learn to cook three dishes from scratch during your cooking lesson that lasts about 1.5 hours. After cooking, sit down at the table to share the fresh, seasonal meal you helped prepare with Lynne. Your menu might include dishes such as sautéed summer corn with shitake mushrooms and garlic, trout from Lake Huron with a cilantro chimichurri and grilled flatbread with a yoghurt and cucumber sauce. Your meal concludes with a dessert such as a fresh fruit crumble or tart or panna cotta.

Lynne is in the wine business and can offer a natural wine pairing with your food for an optional add-on cost. Lynne is excited to share her culture through food and offer an authentic/traditional cooking class in Detroit. She can also accommodate vegetarian diet on request in her Mediterranean cooking class.

PERSONALLY VETTED REVIEW
A Traveling Spoon ambassador visited this host. Here is their personal review.

The whole experience was great. The food was outstanding and the space was very interesting. Lynne is a great host. It was a fun and memorable experience and I would recommend it to others. This experience brings you fresh, simple, highly flavorful food in a modern, yet cozy, loft space. Lynne is a kind, welcoming host that believes in preparing high quality home-cooked meals with ingredients from the local farmer’s market and her backyard garden. An appetizer, a main course, and dessert, made with fresh, local, organic, non-gmo ingredients, paired with a natural wine, prepared perfectly. Not only was it a gourmet dining experience, it was an accessible cooking class as well. One could certainly bring back the knowledge of how to prepare this meal at home for their friends and family. The rehabilitation of the building transforms an old bank into a modern, yet cozy, domestic dwelling that doubles as a well-curated gallery space with authentic artwork from the host’s travels. The music was soothing and worldly, diverse and enjoyable. If the weather allows, the private patio serves as a great space to dine in, with a long dining table, comfy couches, lounge chairs, fresh herbs and flowers, and a large fire pit to keep guests warm. The home is located on a main road in a semi-industrial area. It may not appear as safe to people unfamiliar with the area as there is a vacant building in disrepair on the opposite side of the side street. I felt safe while there, however I would advise guests to be aware of their surroundings and take precautions as you would in any unfamiliar setting.

We had an amazing time with Lynne! She was so nice and knowledgeable about everything. Her home was so cool!! The food and wine was absolutely delicious. The only disappointment was dessert was not included, as was stated on the website. I did bring a cake for the girls' birthdays, but I was looking forward to a home-made dessert from Lynne.

We had a family of 7 participate in Lynne's cooking class. She was a great host who made us feel at ease. She allowed for us to have a nice family event but she added some of her own flavor to the event. She shared some wonderful stories about her unique house, delicious food and wine. We would book her place again for another event because we had such a good time. Be sure to ask about the scoby. ;) Can't wait for our next trip downtown.

Lynne was so nice and fun to learn from and have dinner with. And the food was outstanding! All the food prepared she gave us tips on what else we could do with the different components to spice up our 'go to' meals we normally make, which was incredibly helpful. Would definitely recommend this to others.

Lynne was an authentic, worldly and approachable host. Her space was unique and wonderfully designed. Despite being a former bank (really), clever design and curated art have helped it seem like a modern yet warm living space. She was able to accommodate our dietary request and taught us how to cook a fresh salad, flat bread and a Moroccan dish. The meal was rounded off with a couple of nice wines. This experience did cost a bit more money than the average cooking and dining experience, but was absolutely worth it! My girlfriend and I took away lessons in food, gardening, aesthetics and life. I would highly recommend it anyone who is energized by sharing and learning about the joys of life.

Our evening was a blast! We learned to cook a mouthwatering, fresh, vegetarian (our choice) meal that was a delight to all of our senses. The colorful dishes were light with these wonderful and unexpected flavors. She broke down the steps for preparation so that we can recreate these delicious dishes at home for ourselves or for guests. Our cooking lesson was amazing and really hard to top, but being able to sit and enjoy our meal with our lovely host, Lynne, in her incredible home was priceless! We were even able to talk Mike, her equally delightful husband, into joining us, which rounded out this magical evening. The wine was pretty great, too! Does it sound like we are pleased? Absolutely! We would recommend this fabulous experience to anyone and everyone.

I took my son out for his birthday as we are doing experiences as gifts. Lynn (the chef) was wonderful. The food was delicious and she uses fresh herbs (from her garden) and she also uses local markets. My son has seafood allergies so she was able to accommodate us. I would definitely recommend this experience.
