Meet Simon

Simon (aka DB) has been in the restaurant industry for many decades. DB began cooking as a management trainee at the Savoy hotel. After graduation, he worked in 5-star hotels, opened his first restaurant in Chelsea, and owned and operated a number of notable hostelries. DB then branched into food and beverage consultancy, specializing in essential skills required to operate a successful business, sourcing ingredients, preparation, training and delivery, combined with the equally vital foil of presentation and service. He dons many hats, that of a food inspector, cooking instructor, restaurant reviewer and is actively involved in the pursuit of ever changing food and style trends.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (2-8 guests) Simon thoroughly enjoys all aspects of the cooking process, from sourcing the freshest ingredients to cutting vegetables the right way to using the appropriate temperature and cooking techniques. He makes sure each dish is simple, not over seasoned and plated beautifully before sharing a meal with guests. DB believes that only if the entire process is carefully curated is a meal enjoyable and memorable. Given his vast professional experience DB can cook anything but prefers to follow seasonality, and is a loyal supporter of organic ingredients with a preference for the finest and freshest. Join DB in his dining room to enjoy his signature dishes during your in-home culinary experience.

Cooking experience: (2-8 guests) DB's kitchen is perfect for a cooking demonstration. During your 1-hour demo, gathered around the bench, chopping, slicing, honing, discussing, suggesting, tasting and giggling while prepping for your meal. Later, he will join you at the dining table to share the meal you helped prepare. DB is excited to share his culture through food and offer an authentic/traditional cooking class in London. DB can also accommodate vegetarian meal on request in his London cooking class.

Market visit: (2-8 guests) Meet DB at Leon Restaurant near the London Bridge Underground Station and then begin your tour of London's iconic Borough Market. Borough Market is Britain’s most renowned and oldest food market, an absolute treat for any food lover visiting London! During your one hour market tour, walk through the many stalls heaped with fresh produce, cheese, gourmet food and beautiful patisseries. Hear stories of the history of the market as you stop at a few stalls to sample food and purchase ingredients for your cooking class.

Notes: Unfortunately, Simon does not offer this experience to solo travelers, unless you are happy to pay for two. Also, this experience is not suitable for children below 13 years of age. Please note that Simon can offer a vegetarian meal on request. Wine is included in the cost of your experience.

What a lovely, memorable experience. We didn’t know what to expect when we booked but we knew we wanted an experience. DB and Nikki delivered that in blazing colors!!! The food was incredible, high quality, and beautifully crafted for us. They welcomed us into their home (and 5 star restaurant experience) and we immediately felt like old friends. We learned about food, helped prepare, and throughly enjoyed every step of the way. By the time we sat down for our meal we couldn’t have been more excited. Each dish flowed perfectly with each other and was cooked with such a love and care that you can only experience from a chef who is dedicated to food and takes their time with their craft. The love and passion for food DB has is so apparent when you listen and watch him cook. We ate, we drank, we shared stories (the stories always come out), and had a better experience than we could’ve imagined. His wife, Nicky, was such a fabulous, unexpected treat and was such a lovely addition. She added to the meal in her own beautiful way and created a fabulous dessert spread that put a perfect bow on the entire experience. Me and my family can’t recommend this experience enough. Take your time, enjoy the food, and the stories will come.

Words can not express how much we enjoyed this experience. Simone (DB) was knowledgeable, funny, kind and mostly warm. We felt like we had known him for years. The food was exceptional. He accommodated are dietary needs without a problem. This is a not miss experience if you are in London. By far the highlight of our trip.

Best Experience in a Long Time - Book Now! Simon and his wife were so friendly. My wife and I went to Europe for our honeymoon, and I couldn't have asked for a better host and experience. Simon was professional and knowledgable in all aspects of hosting, cooking and being a great friend. The market was amazing, and fun to grab a few ingredients that we would need for our meal. The train and travel from the market to his house was very easy. Everything that needed to be prepped beforehand, was ready for cooking, yet he still got us involved in chopping, cutting and tasting! I couldn't recommend a better experience - the time was great and truly missed already! We have new friends and some amazing stories forever now. Thanks Simon and Nicki

Talking with DB about his life and cooking adventures was fantastic. We met and shopped at the Borough Market which was wonderful. We then proceeded to take to train to DB’s lovely home to cook Rack of Lamb (wow!) and tasty vegetables. The food, tour, cooking insights and conversations was tremendous!

We had the time of our lives. Our Chef, Simon was fantastic! We so enjoyed our time at the Borough Market, the cab ride to Simon’s home & a wonderful evening of cooking, dining & drinking great foods & wine. We’ve gained a friendship with Mr & Mrs DB, loved meeting Sammy & thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. A night we will never forget!
- Deborah March 19, 2022
The entire evening went by in a flash. Simon is superb company, an exceptionally charming host and a brilliant chef. We will remember and cherish this experience forever.

Host Simon DB is an experienced food professional full of great stories and foodie information. Started with a fun tour of Borough Market that is definitely worth a visit with lots of tasting treats. Then on to Simon’s characterful home where we met his charming wife Nikki and embarked on our cooking experience. Suffice to say some cooking was done, a wonderful meal emerged, conversation flowed with lots of wine and a great time was had by all. Highly recommended! Des & Olga

DB was an incredibly fun and knowledgeable host. Very personable and funny. There was never a dull moment and he made us feel very comfortable and at home. Food was superb and came away feeling like we'd learned more than a few things. Would 100% recommend!! The only slight hiccup is that communication through TripAdvisor is not great. Better to contact Simon directly- much easier that way.

From start to finish, my Borough Market Tour with Simon DB was the best. It was fun, informative, I found delicious produce, including the most incredible sausages from Ginger Pig and the cooking experience was unique. It was like meeting up with an old friend and I'd do it again in a heart beat ... apologies for taking so long to post a review.
- Annebo February 09, 2022
Simon DB was an amazing and knowledgeable host. He taught us about many of the best stands in the bustling market. Topped it off with a fun and easy cooking experience in his kitchen that produced such a yummy dinner!

Welcoming and hospitable Chef Simon offers an exciting, informative, and laughter filled day. London’s Borough Market – so much to see, hear, smell and taste and Simon expertly leads you through it all with stories and history. Then off to Chef’s cosy, welcoming kitchen, which is a gem. Ah-maazing food and wine - some of which was purchased during the tour of Borough Market. Simon guides and teaches with an ever ready smile and clear and easy to follow instructions. Once the meal was cooked it was served with lovely presentation on the beautifully laid table in the dining room. Our host’s attentiveness created the perfect atmosphere. The whole experience from start to finish was wonderful. I cannot recommend this tour or the charming Simon highly enough.

Wow, i honestly dont know where to start! My best friend brought me this experience knowing im not that great at cooking lol We met the lovely simon at borough market where he gave us a tour with all the history of borough market, we then went back to Simons to cook up our meal which we paired with some beautiful wine. Simon is an amazing host, what an amazing human with so much knowledge! We had such a laugh and we definitely dunk to much in the end! lol I would fully recommend this to anyone who is a foodie and enjoys a nice glass of wine (or any drink of your choice) the day went so quickly & i would do it all over again! Thank you simon you really are an amazing cook and a great host :) - p.s. i wish i could remember leaving haha!

DB was an absolute gentleman, took his time to explain what the experience was all about. The personal touch - he had really done his homework about what I liked in terms of food preferences (and dislikes, always a bonus when you do not have to worry about what's on your plate at the table). The kitchen was intimate and this made the experience less daunting - comparable to my own kitchen. I have never seen so many utensils in one kitchen and he knew exactly where each item was. There was a story behind each utensil or cooking tip. The man is well-travelled and his knowledge/understanding of different cultures makes for an exceptionally good host. I'm a self-proclaimed fish connoisseur and everything he demonstrated or explained confirmed that I had lots more to learn. I left the kitchen realising that I am comfortable being classed a novice and that was okay. No one else needs to know that when I strut my skills during the next meal I prepare for others. Clearly DB is a natural conversationalist and before we knew it we were sat at the table ready to eat - time flies when you are having fun indeed! The table was set well and had plenty of space to enjoy the food and drink. The timing was perfect and we never felt rushed throughout the whole experience. Actually we felt at home and being able to relax was something important on this day for us - that we definitely achieved. This experience was for my birthday and there was a personal touch that I would not have expected. A birthday card and crumble instead of cake with a blend of 'alto and first tenor', his wife joined him to sing me a happy birthday. As blew out the candle I suddenly believed in making wishes - it did come true for the record (bubbles may burst but memories and true bonds never fade). The pictures and videos of the day just bring a smile to my face each time I look at them. As experiences go this is up there amongst the best I have had. If you are thinking about it I would say go for it, you will not regret it!

Lovely day of food and drink, with a great host! What a fab experience. My boyfriend bought this as a Christmas present, both being food lovers it was the perfect day out! We met Simon outside Borough Market, he gave a great insight in to elements of the market I had never considered, let us know the best places to get certain ingredients! Then a short train ride back to Simon’s home, a lovey house opposite the station tucked away, straight on to the first bottle of wine as we helped prep the starter, a lot of the main bits of the dishes were already prepared by Simon which is was fab as otherwise we’d have been there all afternoon preparing it all! He then talked us through and demoed some prep skills! The prawns were delicious, the duck was tasty, polished off with a fruit crumble and some more wine! A fantastic afternoon, it felt like we were at a friends opposed to being in someone’s house, I’m pretty sure we over ran the time of the session as we were having so much fun!

This was an amazing experience for everyone in our group...adults and teens! We learned, we laughed, we ate great food, we enjoyed every minute! Simon and Sammy were great hosts and made us feel right at home!

My wife bought this for me as a surprise birthday present. As we arrived at Borough Market to meet Simon at a pre arranged rendezvous point, I had no idea what to expect. Immediately Simon put us at ease, explained the schedule for the day and started our guided tour of the fascinating market. We spent probably a couple of hours there learning fascinating information about the market, the buildings, the history and of course the variety of outlets to look at. Thereafter we travelled with Simon to his characterful home where he had already prepared his well equipped kitchen with the food and programme for the rest of the day, culminating in the consumption of the fruits of his and our labour as the afternoon unfolded. We were encouraged by Simon to assist throughout and my naivety of such an experience was quickly alleviated by Simon’s professional, personable and clear explanations of each and every stage. By the time we sat down to eat with Simon we lost complete appreciation of how long we had been with him and the food was truly delicious. This was an original innovative and highly motivational experience in the presence of a true expert. It was wonderful not to be in ‘a class’ but just Simon, my wife and I , plus brief encounters with Simon’s equally personable wife, because after all we were in their home. I cannot recommend this experience and value for money highly enough. Thank you Simon !

Your safety and security are our top priority. To ensure this, Traveling Spoon personally vets 100% of all hosts, including an in-person host visit, to ensure each host and experience meets our strict quality requirements.

Some hosts offer transportation as an optional add-on for travelers. Typically this is round trip transportation with pick up and drop off at your hotel. Pricing is quoted per car. Specific instructions for transportation will be provided in your confirmation details when your booking is confirmed.

Many of our hosts accommodate solo travelers. You can see if a host accepts solo travelers by looking at the traveler range found next to the experience descriptions on the host profile (indicated by the numbers in parentheses next to "In-home meal", "Cooking experience" and "Market visit").

Most of our Traveling Spoon experiences are incredibly family friendly and can accommodate infants and children. If a host is unable to accommodate children that will be noted in the “Notes” section of their profile. Our child pricing policy is children aged 5-11 are 50% off, and infants aged 0-4 are free.
