Meet Kausar

Kausar is a chef, food stylist and cookbook author who is incredibly passionate about social change through food. She is the author of The Karachi Kitchen cookbook and co-founder of Karachi Kitchen, a line of authentic Pakistani spices and chutneys. Kausar is delighted to share her knowledge of South Asian spices and how they can invigorate Pacific northwest ingredients during her Pike Place Market spice workshop. Kausar hosts the Seattle spice workshop at World Spice, a women-owned spice store that has been selling spices from around the world for over 20 years in Seattle.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

Market visit: (2-6 guests) Your Seattle spice workshop and Pike Place market tour with a chef begins at the Three Girls Bakery in the heart of Pike Place market. Kausar will purchase a loaf of freshly made bread at this bakery started in 1912, the first business licensed to women in the city of Seattle! Walk through the outer section of the market with Kausar to discover and purchase ingredients for your South Asian flavored Pacific Northwest light meal that includes a panini and salad. You may meet Frank, the fourth generation owner of Frank's Produce as you purchase sun-ripened heirloom tomatoes in the summer or an aromatic bulb of fennel in the winter; then walk over to the jovial Ari's Cheese Box to purchase some local cheese. With your basket of fresh produce and ingredients in hand, walk a few blocks over to World Spice Market, a beautiful spice store nestled behind Pike Place Market to begin your spice workshop. Sniff, smell and discover the spices used in South Asian cuisine as well as the techniques used for infusing, flavoring and seasoning South Asian food. Learn about the health benefits of spices from turmeric to fenugreek and the similarities and differences in spice usage between Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi cuisine. Make your own garam masala blend from whole toasted spices and prepare a savory grilled sandwich with Karachi Kitchen chutneys to elevate local and seasonal Pike Place market ingredients. Next, pound in a mortar and pestle your own chai masala, whether heavy on cardamom or redolent with dry ginger, and flavor the hot cup of chai that Kausar prepares for you. Your spice tour and workshop concludes with a bite of chocolate from a Pike Place Market chocolatier.

Please NOTE that unlike our other experiences that include a full meal, this experience includes a light meal of a sandwich and salad, not a complete meal.

Notes: This is not an official tour of Pike Place market but rather a spice and food workshop celebrating Pike Place market ingredients through a South Asian chef's perspective. It includes a short walk through the market where you shop for local produce from Pike Place market vendors together with your host. Think of this experience as an introduction to Pike Place Market and a chance to taste the seasonal Pacific Northwest bounty it offers.

The spice workshop table is standing height, so you’ll be on your feet for the entire experience.
