Meet Rosaline

Rosaline, author of three cookbooks, "Grandmothers' Recipes - Tales from Two Peranakan Kitchens" and its sequels, is a retired banker and grandmother. She was born and raised in Singapore. Her culinary repertoire includes local Singaporean dishes from her Peranakan-Teochew family as well as the Peranakan dishes she learned through her Malaysian mother-in-law.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (2-10 guests) Gather at the table with Rosaline (and possibly her children if they are free) for a Singaporean and Peranakan meal. You might sample her beef rendang (beef cooked in a heady mixture of coconut milk and a paste of mixed ground spices), nyonya laksa (a spicy noodle soup with aromatic coconut milk), or chicken rice (a typical Singaporean dish loved by young and old), and, to finish, ondeh ondeh (a traditional Malaysian dessert made of golden palm sugar wrapped in glutinous rice flour and rolled in freshly grated coconut). After your meal, you can tour Rosaline's lovely organic herb garden.

Cooking experience: (1-10 guests) Your experience involves a cooking demonstration in Rosaline's kitchen designed for cooking instruction. Learn to cook some of the best Singaporean and Peranakan dishes from Rosaline’s family recipes, from dishes like beef rendang to her delicious nyonya laksa. You will then enjoy the meal with Rosaline as she regales you with stories about her experiences as an ex-banker, restaurateur, and a renowned cookbook author. After the meal if you are interested, you can also take a tour of her garden where she plants and harvests the organic herbs she uses for cooking. Rosaline is excited to share her culture through food and offer an authentic/traditional cooking class in Singapore.

First of all, the food tasted great. Now that I got that out of the way, the instruction was simple and well thought out. It will be easy to duplicate the recipes at home. We also learned a great deal of Singaporean history and customs. Overall, I highly recommend this demo/class.

My experience with Traveling Spoon was exactly as I was idealizing since I read an article in Forbes in March 2014, a unique experience. I took my girlfriend birthday and that we just moved to Singapore as an opportunity to use Traveling Spoon for the first time. The food cooked by Rosaline Soon, our host, was delicious, the cooking class demo was exceptional, but what made us love the experience also was the opportunity to meet Rosaline and her husband. We enjoyed every moment of the conversation as well as every bite of the traditional Singaporean and Peranakan food. For me, travelling means knowing other cultures, meeting people and enjoying the traditional food with the locals, Traveling Spoon brought us all together in an unforgettable evening. I also would like to mention the extraordinary attention and service received by Hannah from Traveling spoon team, she shows genuine interest in every interaction we had during the booking process, she was excellent.

Rosaline is one Kind of a host. Perfect cooking experience and great food. We had a splendid time with her and her children who had dinner with us. Very interessing peak into Singaporean culture and good Chats.

Rosaline was a perfectly gracious host and selected specific recipes at our request. She was an experienced instructor who explained how to find and prepare local ingredients and guided us through the cooking process. Rosaline translated and hand-typed numerous recipes and made helpful notes about how to find foods back home. She works very well with experienced and novice home cooks alike. As judged by a native Singaporean, her Peranakan food is delicious! Finally, conversation with her is a delight. This was a wonderful experience and if you are traveling through Singapore, a class with Rosaline is not to be missed!

What a wonderful concept to be welcomed to a home and entertained by a wonderful host and chef. Rosaline and her family where very warm and the food was truly amazing. I range of different Singaporean dishes reflecting the deep culture and history of the peninsula and the many immigrant communities. A great evening and recommended for anyone with a soul, a gut and a penchant for intimate experiences.
