Meet Latha

While Latha has a masters in English literature and is a Montessori teacher, she is extremely passionate about cooking. She learned to cook from her mother when she was growing up in India and has been teaching vegetarian cooking classes for over 20 years now. After Latha got married, her husband's job took them around the world and she enjoyed learning the local cuisine. During their time in Bangkok, she learned to cook Thai vegetarian food. When not cooking for her family and teaching locals how to make Indian food, Latha enjoys photography, traveling and golf. Now that her two grown boys don’t need her as much, she is excited to share her passion for food and cooking with travelers visiting Singapore.

“I enjoy cooking. I enjoy it even more when I share my authentic recipes with like-minded people. I love to meet and entertain people.”

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (2-7 guests) Latha lives in a large apartment in the city center, decorated with art that she collected on her travels over the years. Latha shares her home with her teenage son, husband and a sweet old dog, who follows her closely but does not bark or disturb anyone. She serves South Indian, vegetarian food from traditional, family recipes - the dishes that she grew up eating. Your meal might include a South Indian thali comprised of dishes such as sambhar (a lentil-based vegetable stew), rasam (a soup made from tamarind, tomatoes, black pepper and spices), kootu (a lentil and vegetable stew), vegetable curry, mango pickle, papadum (a thin, crisp, round flatbread) and paruppu payasam (a dessert of rice, jaggery and coconut) OR a breakfast special that includes idli (savory rice cake), vadai (savory fried dumpling), dosai (roasted savory crepe), chutney and sambhar (a lentil-based vegetable stew) OR an adai set which includes adai (spicy pancake made with ground rice), avial (mixed vegetables cooked with ground coconut and chilies), coconut rice, lime rice and tamarind rice. You can choose between one of the above three menu options when booking this experience.

Cooking experience: (2-7 guests) Join your host Latha at her home kitchen to learn to cook a traditional, South Indian, vegetarian meal from family recipes. Latha offers a cooking demonstration during which you watch her prepare three dishes from scratch from one of the three menus options you can choose from, thali, breakfast special or adai set. Your cooking demonstration will last about 1.5 hours. Enjoy learning about the tips and techniques involved in South Indian cooking before you sit down at the table to share the meal you helped prepare with your host Latha.

Notes: Latha can offer vegetarian and vegan meals on request. Also, if you have any specific food requests please let Latha know and she is happy to customize the menu for you.

PERSONALLY VETTED REVIEW
A Traveling Spoon ambassador visited this host. Here is their personal review.

Latha made me feel welcomed the minute she opened the door and she was genuinely interested in finding out more about me. Her home is very nicely decorated with items that showed her and her family’s interests and taste. Latha was extremely knowledgeable about Indian cuisine, both Northern and Southern and their many differences. She also shared so much about traditional Indian cooking, including the different ways of cooking, the different appliances e.g. blenders, and also the traditional items, e.g. the traditional Indian pressure cooker and spice tray. The food was excellent, with a wide variety of flavours and textures even though it was vegetarian. It makes me want to explore more of Indian cuisine and look forward to more experiences with Latha. All the food served was excellent, but my favorites were the Vethakuzhambu and Beans Thoran.

This was our favourite experience in Singapore, and was especially popular with our teenage daughters! Our host welcomed us warmly into her home, and tailored our class to our interests and dietary needs. She explained and demonstrated techniques so clearly, and sent us recipes afterward. We loved sitting down to a feast we had created together at the end!

Thank you so much Latha, I had a great experience. She explained every spices and technique needed to make good Indian dishes and also gave me alternative options to make according to individual preferences and taste. I also enjoyed fantastic lunch and chat with her. I would highly recommend trying this class.

My husband and I really enjoyed our class with Latha. We learned how to make a few Northern and Southern Indian dishes as well as learning more about Indian food in general. We appreciated that she had the recipes already printed out for us to make notes during the class. She also made a few other dishes already for us to try which were all delicious and shared all the recipes with us. Appreciate that she was able to accommodate vegan dietary restrictions as well. Would highly recommend.
