This experience was as much a cultural exchange as a cooking class. We learned about each other and our families, and I even got to use some of the tools her great-grandmother used to pulverize sesame seeds. The large black square dish was also her great grandmother’s. Machiko uses these for more ceremonial or special occasions. I felt honored that my lunch was served on it. We made ginger pork, miso soup, steamed Japanese mustard greens with tofu and sesame seeds, and sushi rolls. Along with a delicious meal, I came away reaffirmed that humanity is alive and well. Most of us share common goals, people are people, and we can keep taking care of one another no matter where we live or what the circumstances.
